Reporting on child poverty in Vietnam

December 11, 2008

The Vice-Minister opens the workshop

At the end of November, my colleague Chris and I went to Hanoi to present our final report for the UNICEF child poverty study. A dissemination workshop was organized by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs and results on child poverty were presented and discussed with a wide audience from different line ministries, provincial governments, international organizations and academic institutes. The Vice Minister opened the workshop and seemed keen on adopting a more multidimensional approach towards child poverty. Although the results were quite high, especially in reference to standard monetary measurement, the majority of the workshop participants agreed that child poverty involves more than just the monetary conditions of the families that children live in. The media also picked up on our story and an article was published in the Viet Nam News about the findings. All in all, it was a positive ending to this project and hopefully it will lead to future cooperations. Hanoi is definitely a nice place to visit, no matter how many times you’ve already been there…
