New publication in Asian Social Work and Policy Review

February 1, 2010

Last week, my article entitled “Social Welfare in Vietnam – a curse or blessing for poor children?” was accepted for publication in the Asian Social Work and Policy Review (ASWP). ASWP presents research papers on social policy and social practices in various countries in Asia and this particular article considers the performance of social welfare programmes in Vietnam with respect to children. It considers the coverage of social welfare as well as its policy impact, despite the fact that (child) poverty reduction might not be the main objective of social welfare programmes (for example, Vietnam runs an extensive programme to support war invalids and survivors of the war). We find that the impact of social welfare on child poverty is very low and conclude that alternative social policies are needed to address the issue of child poverty.

The article will soon be available from the website of Asian Social Work and Policy Review (ASWP): http://www.wiley.com/bw/journal.asp?ref=1753-1403
